Sammie Szmodics makes West Ham United admission amid Blackburn transfer speculation
Blackburn Rovers goal-machine Sammie Szmodics has admitted he is a mad West Ham United fan amid speculation about his future.
The 28-year-old has been in excellent form in the Championship this season, scoring 27 goals in just 44 matches with reports suggesting a host of Premier League sides are keen to secure his signature this summer [The Sun, 16 March].
While the Irons are yet to be one of those sides linked with the Irish international, Szmodics has revealed that he is a massive supporter of the club and has even tried to make his young children follow the Hammers.
Speaking on The No Tippy Tappy Football podcast (9 May) he said: “It’s hard being a footballer and supporting a team, but obviously West Ham is the closest team to us and I started following West Ham at 14 or 15 and it took off from there.
“We played them in the cup last year and It was mixed emotions because we beat them on penalties and it was like I didn’t want to knock West Ham out because we were never going to win the Carabao Cup. West Ham maybe weren’t either but they had a better chance.
“I’ve played there, I scored my penalty there so it was mixed emotions. I try to get to all the games, when I was at Peterborough two years ago I used to go to every game and I go to the away games when they’re up here against Manchester United, City, and Liverpool, I go to all of them.
“I’m trying to get my daughters to support West Ham, but they’re not really interested at the minute.”
Would West Ham United sign Blackburn star Sammie Szmodics in the summer transfer window?
The Hammers aren’t going to immediately go out and buy Szmodics just because of this revelation, but you have to wonder if the 28-year-old could be a good fit for the Irons as they prepare for next season.
While there is still some uncertainty over the managerial situation at the London Stadium, speculation continues to circle around Lucas Paqueta’s future in East London, with reports linking him with a move to Manchester City.

If the Brazilian was to leave, Szmodics could be an excellent replacement as he tends to play just off of a physical number nine as a withdrawn forward. Therefore, he could combine well with Michail Antonio.
Whether or not this sort of move could come to fruition remains to be seen, but it is clear that agreeing on personal terms wouldn’t be much of an issue as the Irish International has made his allegiances very clear.
