Writing on Patreon, the reliable Irons insider reported that Mike Rigg was also in contention to be West Ham’s new recruitment chief but it is understood that Newman, 57, has won the race.
It is understood that he was placed on gardening leave after speaking to the Hammers about joining their recruitment team.

Good addition?
Newman could be a familiar name for some West Ham supporters as he played for Bristol City and Norwich in the 1980s and 1990s.
He also had a stint at Southend going into 2002 and served as Bournemouth’s assistant manager between 2006 and 2008, where he worked with Kevin Bond and Eddie Howe.
Newman joined Man City in 2008 with his Linkedin profile saying he was their “International Scouting & Recruitment Manage”.
We’re not sure which signings Newman was responsible for at the Etihad but there’s no doubt that if he held that job at Man City for so long that he is very good at what he does.
West Ham fans, in our opinion, should be excited by this.
Not only does it mean that once he arrives, we should see our transfer window kick into gear with no new signings yet made at a senior level.
Once Newman is in place and working alongside David Moyes, you would imagine that he would use everything he knows about scouting and recruitment to bring some very good talent to East London.
In other West Ham news, a trialist has been welcomed to the Irons after he was released by a title-winning club.
