Richard Keys blasts ‘ridiculous’ PGMOL as update emerges on West Ham United and Wolves controversy
After West Ham United’s comeback victory at Wolves was marred by VAR controversy, Richard Keys has hit out at the PGMOL’s reasoning behind the disallowing of Max Kilman’s last-gasp equaliser.
Responding on X after Wolves’ chairman Jeff Shi sent a statement to the Premier League concerning the number of disputable decisions which have gone against his team this season, Keys said that the PGMOL’s stance on such rules was ‘ridiculous.’
Wolves captain Kilman saw a stoppage-time header ruled out by VAR with one of the last actions in their 2-1 loss to the Irons, after striker Tawanda Chirewa was ruled to have been obstructing West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski’s line of sight from an offside position.
In his X post, Keys said: “The PGMOL are only making matters worse by trying to defend the ridiculous decision to disallow Wolves’ equaliser yesterday. They are adrift on law. The path of the ball was not over the head of the attacker. It was well to the right. It was a perfectly good goal.”
Plenty of questions for Moyes and West Ham despite three points
Late VAR drama and incredulity aside, West Ham’s second-half revival was stark contrast to their performance late on against Newcastle the Saturday prior, spurning a 3-1 lead after 76 minutes to lose 4-3 at St. James’ Park.
Between the two results was a 1-1 draw with Champions League-chasing Tottenham, and after going 1-0 down at Molineux, Lucas Paqueta’s penalty and James Ward-Prowse’s strike directly from a corner won the Hammers an overdue three points.
Wolves’ equaliser, had it stood, would have been a crushing blow for David Moyes’ side, and in a game dominated by set-pieces, switching off for the last one of the match had the potential to undo the clear improvements made by West Ham.
Moyes will be keen to iron out these issues ahead of their next match, as West Ham keep pace in the fight for Europe despite the adversity surrounding their recent results.
In other West Ham news, Gary Lineker and the Match of the Day panel also responded to the official ruling which saw Kilman’s late header chalked off.
