Report – West Ham stance on summer swoop for 28y/o PL ace revealed
West Ham are not interested in signing Manchester United defender Phil Jones, according to Claret & Hugh.
The Hammers were linked with a move for the England international by a report from The Mirror earlier in the month which stated that they were willing to go toe-to-toe with Newcastle United in an effort to land their man.
Irons boss David Moyes previously worked with the 28-year-old during his tenure at Old Trafford, and it was initially understood that a reunion could be on the cards.
Claret & Hugh have been quick to quell those rumours, however, stating that Moyes’ transfer priorities at West Ham rule out a potential switch.
The boss is said to be exclusively interested in players aged 25 or under, and Jones’ injury record is another point of concern for the Hammers.
Is this the right move from West Ham?
In truth, probably, yes.
The Hammers have been stung before when it comes to making ambitious moves for England internationals who maybe haven’t been cutting it at top six clubs – see Jack Wilshere as an example – and it’s understandable that they don’t want to be caught out again.
Jones has struggled at United in recent times, and has been limited to just eight appearances in all competitions.
Moreover, the states suggest that Jones wouldn’t offer a great deal of improvement to the Hammers.
So far this term he has registered fewer defensive duels won, fewer interceptions, and fewer clearances per game than Angelo Ogbonna, as per Wyscout.
This rumour feels like one that should just be forgotten about.
