Report: West Ham squad want Moyes to be handed contract extension
The West Ham squad want to see manager David Moyes earn a contract extension after overseeing an impressive start to the Premier League campaign, according to the Daily Mail.
West Ham suffered defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal in their opening two fixtures but have been unbeaten in the league since by winning against Wolves and Leicester before draws against Tottenham and title-chasing Manchester City.
The Mail now reports that Hammers players have backed Moyes to get a new deal with his existing terms set to expire at the end of the season.
However, West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold are delaying plans to discuss an extension with the former Everton and Manchester United manager as they want to be sure that the Irons will not get dragged into another relegation battle first.
It’s been a promising start to the season – there’s no denying that.
It’s unlikely that any West Ham fan would have expected the club to pick up eight points from matches against Wolves, Leicester, Spurs and Man City and after this weekend’s trip to Liverpool, there are several winnable games coming up.
But you can see why Sullivan and Gold are delaying plans at the moment.
West Ham’s board know that although the club’s had a strong start, there’s still a possibility of this good form coming to a screeching halt. The last thing they want to do is hand Moyes an extension and then see the results take a turn for the worst.
The Hammers aren’t against sacking managers are a poor run and it will be less costly to do that if the Scottish manager doesn’t have long left on his contract.
It’s a tough one but if this form is maintained into December and the New Year then we’re sure that Moyes will be handed an extension around January time.
In other West Ham news, Moyes’ system has the ability to expose Liverpool’s weakness on Saturday.
