Report – West Ham plot summer raid for 22-goal danger man

West Ham are keeping tabs on Brentford striker Ollie Watkins, according to The Sun

A report from the national outlet suggests that the Hammers are closely scouting the 24-year-old, who has hit 22 goals already this term.

It is understood that the Irons are planning to test the Bees’ resolve with a firm approach for the player, who they attempted to prise away from the Championship outfit in January.

It is also believed that David Moyes is keen on heavily restructuring his squad should he succeed in guiding the Hammers to safety this term, with a much greater emphasis on signing talented young players from the second tier – as seen with the signing of Jarrod Bowen in January.

Would Watkins be a good signing?

Obviously, there is always a certain amount of risk involved with signing a player who has yet to have a taste of top flight football, but if the gamble pays off, it could be a wildly successful one.

Certainly, you would have to argue that Watkins has all the necessary traits needed to be a real hit in the Premier League.

As well as 22 goals in 37 outings this season, he is also blessed with electric pace, and a canny knack of outsmarting defenders with his movement.

Similarly, with 2.6 shots, 1.5 key passes, and an average match rating of 7.28 this season, it’s clear this is a player who provides a constant attacking threat, and who rarely drops beneath his own high standards.

Having somebody like him playing alongside and aiding Sebastien Haller could be a real masterstroke, and hopefully this is one rumour that comes to fruition.
