Report: West Ham players unhappy at Kurt Zouma wages
There is unhappiness among the West Ham squad after Kurt Zouma was handed a hefty wage packet to sign from Chelsea, according to Charlie Wyett.
Writing for The Sun, Wyett claims members of David Moyes’ squad are not fans of the six-figure weekly wage the France international is earning at the London Stadium.
He wrote: “The £125,000 a week being banked by new arrival Kurt Zouma, 26, from Chelsea has not gone down particularly well with other players.”
Case to be made?
Wyatt did not elaborate any further on the claim and what the disquiet has arisen from.
Are the squad more annoyed about not being paid a fair wage, or that Zouma is earning too much?
Well, on Zouma’s part, he was hardly likely to be paid much less at the London Stadium.
Playing for a wealthy club like Chelsea for a number of years, the central defender was surely earning considerable sums in west London.
Indeed, with interest in him sure to be high and being contracted to the current European champions, it seemed fanciful that he would not be pushing for a big contract at his next club, especially given the fact he is in prime years for netting a big deal.
If the club are willing to meet his demands, it’s harsh to take issue with the player.
But this is an issue that was predicted by ex-England striker Darren Bent, who told talkSPORT last month that Zouma’s wages may “upset” the Irons squad if he was to become the highest-paid player.
Bent questioned whether he had done enough to earn that with his performances in recent years.
If that is the case, and Zouma is the highest earner, then someone like Declan Rice can probably feel the right to be aggrieved.
