Report: West Ham look to hijack midfielder deal

West Ham United seem to be linked with all and sundry when it comes to transfer windows, which is probably down to the scattergun approach of David Sullivan.

The Hammers co-owner is back in charge of wheeling and dealing at the London Stadium, and he seems to be searching far and wide for new recruits.

However, you do get the feeling that he only spurs into action when other clubs force him to, as has happened on Thursday.

Football Insider reported that the east London outfit have hijacked their Premier League rivals Burnley’s £9million deal for Bristol City captain Josh Brownhill.

The Clarets have been working on a swoop for the midfielder all month long, and have now had an offer accepted.

However, the Irons have now contacted Bristol City and told them that they are willing to match Burnley’s offer for the 24-year-old.

West Ham’s intervention may have come too late, though, as Brownhill prepares to undergo a medical at Turf Moor and Nahki Wells gets ready to head in the opposite direction to Ashton Gate.

Is this peak West Ham?

Pretty much, yes. It feels like the Hammers like to make an effort at the last minute just so they can say they tried, knowing full well that they won’t succeed with such a last-ditch approach.

Brownhill is seemingly poised to join Sean Dyche’s side, while Burnley have the advantage of being able to give the Robins Wells, also.

West Ham simply cannot offer them the same sort of deal, even if they can match the fee. Plus, why would Brownhill snub Burnley when they’ve been chasing him all month just to join the dysfunctional Irons?

In other West Ham news, the club have reportedly made a bid for a Premier League rival’s young starlet.
