Report: West Ham join transfer race for defender, 21y/o has £10.8m release clause

West Ham United have joined the race to sign Real Vallodolid defender Mohammed Salisu, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper have claimed on their website that the Irons have joined other Premier League teams such as Everton, Southampton and Manchester United in the summer.

Salisu, 21, has enjoyed a superb breakthrough season in La Liga this campaign and is keen to make a switch to the Premier League this early in his career.

The Daily Mail has reported that Salisu has a slender release clause of only £10.8million, as interest continues to grow.

David Moyes is understood to want to add two defenders, a midfielder and another forward to his side in the summer at the London Stadium.

Obviously, the Premier League status of the club will determine their transfer targets this summer with Moyes wary of outside interest in the likes of Declan Rice and Issa Diop.

It is understood that Southampton have already made an offer for Salisu recently, but it was well below the reported release clause of the defender.

Comparing Salisu to Diop via WhoScored, the Ghanaian defender has had a very similar season in terms of statistics.

Salisu has performed better in terms of tackles and blocks in Spain, but Diop has convincingly averaged more interceptions and clearances.

Those stats could prove that should the Irons survive in the Premier League, a partnership or Diop and Salisu could be very effective next season.
