Report – West Ham fail with £22.2m bid for La Liga star

West Ham had a £22.2 million bid rejected for Real Betis forward Loren Moron, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Hammers entered the market for an attacking talent to help ease the workload of record signing Sebastien Haller, eventually completing a deal to snap up winger Jarrod Bowen from Hull City.

But it is understood that the club also made a move to sign 26-year-old attacker Moron from Betis.

The report from the Italian outlet states that the Irons were knocked back in their efforts to lure him to east London.

The article suggests that Betis were holding out for closer to £35 million for the Spaniard.

Moron has hit 11 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit this termWest Ham

Would Moron have been a good signing for the Hammers?

It’s hard to say for sure, but there’s a reason why the club were interested in him.

Moron has an identical expected goals rating for the season, with an average of 0.37 per match, but the difference in their actual goals per game ratios is very, very noticeable.

While Haller has just 0.29 goals per game this season, Moron has a relatively healthy 0.46, as per Wyscout.

In that regard, if you’re looking for a goalscorer, it makes sense to try and snap up one who is ostensibly performing better than the one you have.

That being said, is he worth £35 million? It’s obviously a subjective debate, but it does seem like an awfully steep fee.
