Report: David Sullivan hands David Moyes final say on West Ham transfers

David Sullivan is prepared to step back and hand David Moyes free reign over West Ham transfers, according to The Athletic.

Sullivan, alongside David Gold and Karen Brady, has become a derided figure at the London Stadium with West Ham fans wary of his constant meddling in first-team affairs.

But the sensational success of Moyes look to have convinced him that the Scot can do it all on his own.

Roshane Thomas wrote for The Athletic: “Sullivan has backed the manager with money and crucially no longer insists on the same involvement in transfers. He places a lot of confidence in Moyes’ judgement with recruitment.

“Sullivan has admitted that in the past the club “chased dreams” and “bought a pile of players who, unfortunately, haven’t improved the club”, while at one point Sue Watson, chair of the West Ham United Independent Supporters’ Association, called for Sullivan to “step back from making transfer decisions”.

“The club’s 2016 accounts said Sullivan “is in charge of this operation and, in effect, takes a football director role in helping to select and negotiate all football transfers”. He has since played that down, but it is understood he did have significant involvement in West Ham’s recruitment.

“This appears to be changing, for the better. Sullivan discusses targets, but Moyes has the final say on signings. As it stands, there are no plans to appoint a director of football.”

GSB finally back down?

Gold, Sullivan and Brady are all strong and forthright characters that have remained steadfast in their ambitions and clashed with supporters for many years.

Fans have become disenchanted with their running of the club, from the new stadium to transfers, or the lack of in some cases.

We still want them out as soon as possible, but at least there are some shoots of positivity in that there is some recognition that they don’t always know best.

It may have taken years and years and it’s taken a strong figure like Moyes for them to see their error of their ways but it’s finally happened.

His knowledge of football supersedes all of their combined ‘expertise’ and that’s why we’re staring down the barrel of Champions League football with seven Premier League games remaining.

Astute signings like Craig Dawson and Vladimir Coufal have been crucial in masterminding this and we’re glad that Moyes is set to be given an even bigger role to bring in the talents he feels can take us to the next level.
