Pundit delighted with Ollie Scarles West Ham United contract news

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie is pleased West Ham have tied down Ollie Scarles to his first professional contract after the 17-year-old impressed during the Conference League win over FCSB.

The club announced on 13 December that Scarles had committed his future to the club after an impressive start to the season for the versatile midfielder.

McAvennie was impressed with Scarles during the win in Romania and would like to see the Hammers bring a few more younger players into the first-team equation.

“He’s been doing really well and his dad’s a big West Ham fan, he’s West Ham mad. From what I’ve gathered he’s done really well when he’s come in for a few games,” McAvennie exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“The fans love young players being given a chance. Fans will know his family are all big West Ham fans and he will get more time because of that.

“It saves the club a bit of money as he’s come through the academy and could go on to earn the club some cash in the future. That’s what David Moyes will want, for younger players to come in and make a difference. Similar to Declan Rice coming through the ranks, who will eventually go on to make them a lot of money.

“I think that’s what they need to do bring a few more younger players through.”

Scarles follows 18-year-old Callum Marshall in committing his long-term future to the club after the Northern Irish striker signed his first professional contract after a 12-month scholarship.

David Moyes will be eager to give further first-team opportunities to some of his younger players in the second half of the campaign.
