Portsmouth boss shares traits he loves about ‘excellent’ West Ham United loanee Freddie Potts
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho highlighted composure on the ball and strength in the tackle as traits he loves about “excellent” West Ham loanee Freddie Potts.
The 21-year-old has played four times for Pompey thus far as the defensive midfielder looks to gain valuable minutes in the Championship.
Although he hasn’t yet managed to score or assist, Mousinho has shared how happy he is with Potts’ impact on the team.
“I think Freddie has been excellent coming into the side. He struggled along with everyone at Stoke, he wasn’t the only one, it was a difficult game, but overall has been really good,” Mousinho said to The News, Portsmouth (10 October).
“When you are asking a young lad to come in and play for the first time at this level, there’s going to be some adjustment, but I’ve been really pleased with him coming in off the back of not having a full pre-season.
“He’s very calm and composed on the ball, positionally very good, and also strong enough in the tackle and in his challenges to emerge with a lot of credit as a holding midfielder. His overall game has been very, very solid”.
West Ham United will be happy with the progression of Freddie Potts
The Hammers’ youth ranks are filled to the brim with talent. Players such as Lewis Orford, who has just extended his stay with the club and Potts are just two of the names that spring to mind in terms of promising players at the London Stadium.
Although the youngster was left on the bench for the first two championship games of the season, since his inclusion in Mousinho’s squad, he has arguably been one of their best players.

Potts spent last season on loan with Wycombe and although he played 43 times last term, his progression with Pompey has come on leaps and bounds, just as Frank McAvennie predicted.
He’s still likely a fair distance away from making it into Julen Lopetegui’s first team, but, if his progression continues as it’s started throughout the rest of the season, there’s no reason why he couldn’t find himself at least competing to stay with the Hammers next term rather than being shipped out on loan once again.
