Peter Crouch claims West Ham owners would rather top-five finish than trophy in cup
West Ham have enjoyed a successful season but Peter Crouch thinks there is a split between fans and the owners on one subject.
David Moyes has got the team over-performing this season and the Irons sit sixth in the league as a result.
That has sparked talk of European qualification from Darren Bent, and whether supporters would want that above an FA Cup win.
The latter is now out of the question due to Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to Manchester United.
However, before that game finished Crouch gave his thoughts on the debate.
It is good that such a debate is possible to have as it highlights our improvement under Moyes.
We performed well at Old Trafford despite a number of setbacks, which included injuries to Angelo Ogbonna, Issa Diop and Andriy Yarmolenko.
Moyes deserves a tonne of credit, and if he got us into Europe he would be remembered fondly for years to come.
However, the FA Cup is still a massive trophy for fans.
Our only silverware since the 1980 Cup win is the 1999 Intertoto Cup, so we are desperate to win something again.
Sullivan & Gold may not share that view due to the finances involved in European qualification, so Crouchy has hit the nail on the head.
We have not enjoyed a lengthy cup run in ages, too, so reaching the latter stages could really galvanise the fans and bring back some belief.
The trip to Man United was always going to be tricky but next season we should be looking to go further in both domestic cups.
After all, winning either would also present us with a path into Europe.
