Paul Scholes thrilled by Manuel Lanzini in West Ham 2-1 loss v Man City

West Ham suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with their attempt at a comeback proving futile.

Manuel Lanzini came off the bench to halve his side’s deficit with the last kick of the game, and Paul Scholes was blown away with the strike while reacting to it during punditry duties on Premier League productions.

The Argentine attacker struck his goal well, giving Ederson no chance, but it was too little, too late as the hosts held on to all three points after a dominating performance.

The BT Sport pundit said: “What a goal to finish with. It came far too late, he nicks it well off Fernandinho. What a goal that is.”

Should have started?

Lanzini came on for Said Benrahma in the 59th minute, and while he did not see plenty of chances, he made the most of the one that fell to him on the stroke of full-time.

West Ham did not threaten Ederson a lot, failing to fashion out clear-cut chances against a resolute Man City defence.

The Hammers have been in fine form this term, but back-to-back defeats at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Pep Guardiola’s side have exposed some of their shortcomings, especially when it comes to squad depth.

They remain fourth in the table after 13 games, but only superior goal difference separate them from fifth-placed Arsenal, while third-placed Liverpool are now five points ahead of them.

The Irons face Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday before hosting Chelsea at the weekend, and they need to quickly get back to winning ways to keep their league campaign on track.
