Paul Merson takes brutal unprompted West Ham swipe after what he saw in Chelsea loss vs Brighton
Paul Merson doesn’t have much good to say about West Ham right now.
It has been a turbulent 24 hours at the London Stadium, with Graham Potter being sacked at West Ham in a shock announcement.
This came after Potter took up media duty for West Ham, answering a question on a funny and totally bizarre social media trend featuring his face on various celebrities and public figures.
Off the back of this, Potter was told his time was up, and West Ham have since replaced him with Nuno Espirito Santo.
The appointment of Nuno hasn’t reflected well on David Sullivan, but it is activity elsewhere that has caused Merson to take a swipe at the Irons.

Paul Merson compares empty Stamford Bridge to London Stadium
There is no getting away from the fact that the Englishman deserved to be sacked after a terrible spell in charge of the E20 outfit.
West Ham lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace last time out in yet another disappointing matchday at the Olympic Park.
This didn’t go down well with the home supporters, sparking a mass exodus in a similar fashion to previous defeats against Chelsea and Tottenham.
Empty seats have now become a permanent feature of West Ham games at the London Stadium, turning the Hammers into a laughing stock elsewhere in English football.
This has been showcased by Merson while speaking on Sky Sports News on 27 September, as he watched Chelsea fall to a 3-1 defeat against Brighton.
Late goals from Maxim De Cuyper and Danny Welbeck secured three points for the Seagulls, prompting many home fans to leave, resulting in a dagger comment from the ex-England international.
He said, unprompted: “The full-time whistle goes and Stamford Bridge looks like the London Stadium. It’s virtually empty.”

Paul Merson isn’t wrong with West Ham swipe
Unfortunately, the former Arsenal star is right to use the Hammers’ ground as an example of a vastly empty Premier League stadium.
Fans are beginning to grow impatient and see the London Stadium as a sign of how badly things have gone since the move away from the Boleyn Ground.
This has sparked many long-term supporters to give away their season tickets, while others have shown no concern towards leaving early, despite sitting third for average attendance in the Premier League this campaign.
Club | Stadium | Average attendance (25/26) | |
1. | Manchester United | Old Trafford | 69,200 |
2. | Tottenham | Tottenham Hotspur Stadium | 61,164 |
3. | West Ham | London Stadium | 62,459 |
4. | Liverpool | Anfield | 60,371 |
5. | Arsenal | Emirates Stadium | 60,146 |
This has seen fans of other clubs in England share their hatred towards the Olympic Stadium.
Merson has echoed that and proved exactly what is wrong with West Ham at the moment, even with Nuno coming in as head coach.
