Paul Merson predicts West Ham clash against Manchester United

West Ham travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday (22 January), and a tough clash is expected between two of the top-four contenders.

The Hammers will be keen to bounce back against the Red Devils after their loss to Leeds United last weekend, but Paul Merson does not see that happening, predicting a 1-1 draw while previewing the game in his Sportskeeda column.

Both teams are not particularly firing on all cylinders at the moment, and it is hard to separate them.

Merson said: “I can’t have Manchester United at the moment. Their Premier League win against Brentford yesterday papers over the cracks.

“Little Brentford gave them a footballing lesson in the first half, and United needed David de Gea to bail them out yet again.

“It’s happening too many times – they conceded the lead against Newcastle, and they had to hang on for a draw against Aston Villa.

“West Ham are not particularly consistent either – just when you think they’re back, they go and lose to Leeds at home. I just can’t bring myself to predict a Manchester United win at the moment, however, and I think West Ham will cause them some problems in the final third.”

West Ham should be handed some boosts with Kurt Zouma, Mark Noble and Tomas Soucek set to be available after missing the game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side, and that should give them a chance against the Red Devils.

The Old Trafford outfit have won just two of their last five league games, and they are not invincible.

However, with just two points separating them from the fourth-placed Hammers, Man Utd know they cannot afford to slip up in the race for Champions League football, and they will be giving their all.

David Moyes’ men have often proven themselves against the bigwigs this term, and it is why they will fancy their chances at the Theatre of Dreams.

With Zouma returning and the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Michail Antonio on fine forms right now, a win is very much possible against Man Utd.

It is a game that could go either way, but the result could have a huge say on both sides’ campaigns, and it is why a fierce game should be expected.
