Paul Merson predicts result of West Ham United Premier League clash v Bournemouth

Paul Merson has backed Bournemouth to beat West Ham United 2-0 win the two sides meet at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers head to the South Coast looking to build on their impressive draw against Arsenal, with David Moyes’ side coming from two goals behind.

Despite West Ham’s improved performance, Merson believes Bournemouth’s impressive run of form will be a bridge too far.

West Ham United

“Bournemouth have been outstanding this month. I’ve said it from the word go – I didn’t see them going down. They bought well in January, and they’ll be safe if they win this game,” said Merson (Sportkeeda predictions, 20 April).

“Arsenal shot themselves in the foot against West Ham after the half-hour mark last week. Fair play to the players, but Arsenal did let them back in the game.

“West Ham did pull off a comeback, but they’re also playing on Thursday night. I’m backing Bournemouth to win this game. Bournemouth 2-0 West Ham United.”

Back to back

Back-to-back victories have been elusive for West Ham during the 2022/23 season – and considering Bournemouth’s form, this is by no means an easy task for Moyes’ men. The onus is certainly on the Hammers to pick up a positive result.

The Cherries’ run of wins has seen them clear of the relegation zone and Gary O’Neil will know his side is extremely close to securing their Premier League safety. Despite West Ham’s game in hand, they are still within touching distance of the drop zone and need to win to really pull themselves away from danger.

West Ham

The comeback against Arsenal was one of their most impressive displays of late and gave a glimpse of what we know this squad is capable of. Sometimes the phrase ‘too good to go down’ is banded about, but in West Ham’s case, it’s probably true.

Moyes’ men haven’t been performing to the levels they know they can, but the quality within the squad should eventually drag them to safety.
