Paul Merson predicts result of West Ham United ‘cup final’ showdown v Arsenal
West Ham United’s winless run in all competitions will stretch to seven matches when they face Arsenal on Sunday 11 February, according to Paul Merson.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that the pressure will continue to mount on David Moyes following the Irons’ 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, predicting that Mikel Arteta’s side will claim all three points at the London Stadium with a 2-1 win.
Arteta’s Gunners have won their past three games, including a huge win over Liverpool last time out and Merson believes Arsenal will take advantage of West Ham’s “terrible run of form” to continue their title charge.
Writing for Sportskeedsa on Thursday (8 February) he said: “I think they’ll win this one but this is West Ham’s cup final – they’ll be looking forward to facing their London rivals.
“David Moyes’ side haven’t won a Premier League game since beating Arsenal in the reverse fixture nearly a month and a half ago, which shows that they are on a terrible run of form.
“This is where Arsenal are at the moment – they are a very good team, but they need to show their killer instinct and see off games if they are to win their first league title in over 20 years.”
David Moyes must-win West Ham ‘cup final’ v Arsenal
As Merson suggested, West Ham’s recent form in the Premier League has been nothing short of “terrible” and it has seen pressure begin to mount on Moyes at the London Stadium from supporters and some pundits alike.
Arsenal are by no means an easy opponent for the Hammers, but they have shown in recent weeks that they can be beaten. Moyes managed to cause an upset at the Emirates Stadium and he will be hoping that lightning will strike twice on Sunday.

While a defeat won’t see the Scotsman sacked, it could well see contract talks stall once again. Moyes had suggested that talks were continuing following the January transfer window, but there has been little suggestion that a new deal has been agreed.
Hopefully, the Hammers will be able to beat the odds and pull off another upset to get their season back on track and silence the speculation surrounding Moyes’ future.
