Paul Merson makes ‘worst game ever’ claim about West Ham player after disaster v Liverpool

Paul Merson has claimed that West Ham goalkeeper had his “worst” game ever during the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on Monday evening.

The Polish stopper endured a torrid evening at Anfield, and was arguably at fault for all three of the Reds’ goals in some capacity.

The result left the Hammers in the bottom three going into this weekend’s Premier League clash with Southampton, which they won 3-1, and Merson was quick to point out just how disastrous his display was.

West Ham

Speaking to on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, Saturday 29th February, 2.45pm), he said: “I’d go as far as to say that it’s probably the worst game he’s ever had in his career since he started as a goalkeeper.

“The three mistakes are something else.

“It’s all gone horribly wrong.”

How bad was Fabianski’s display against Liverpool?

First of all, let’s preface this by saying that the Pole’s horror show in Monday was incredibly uncharacteristic.

Fabianski is usually the most assured talent in the Hammers’ squad, and there’s a reason why he was named player of the year last term.

With that in mind, it’s hard to be overly critical of him, but judging him on the merits of this match alone, he had a shocker at Anfield.

The first goal is bad enough, and his decision to try and parry the ball well away from danger, as opposed to taking the sting out of it and deescalating the attack, as come back to bite him severely.

But the second is undoubtedly the worst of the bunch.

Mo Salah’s shot is so tame that even he looks shocked when it goes straight through Fabianski’s hands, and one any other day you would have fully expected the keeper to deal with the effort with ease.

Hopefully it doesn’t affect Fabianski too much, however, and he can bounce back to his usual self over the remainder of the campaign.
