Paul Merson makes West Ham top-four admission

Paul Merson has suggested that West Ham will secure a Champions League spot if they can maintain consistency.

He has used Newcastle United’s example, suggesting the Magpies have won three games on the trot, and that they deserve big credit for the turnaround.

The Sky Sports pundit stated that if West Ham can replicate that now, they will be securing fourth place in the league.

“If West Ham were to do that now, they’ve got every chance of playing Champions League football next year. The Premier League is hard, so to win three straight games is impressive,” wrote Merson for Sky Sports.

Spot on

West Ham are one of the clubs that are vying for a top-four finish this season.

The likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are expected to fight for the title race and the top three spots are likely to be shared by them.

However, the fourth spot is up for grabs.

The Hammers are likely to face strong competition from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, while Wolves have an outside chance as well.

West Ham started the season on a bang but in recent months they’ve dropped off the pace a bit with David Moyes’ side failing to maintain consistency.

The good news for them is the other rivals are also dropping points at an alarming rate and as a result, the Hammers are still in the race for the elusive Champions League spot.

The Hammers have managed just one win in their last four league games. They have picked up results despite not playing well, and Merson is spot on that if the results start to improve, they will be a different beast.

In other West Ham news, we think the Irons should utilise this lethal tactic more often after it worked to perfection against Leicester.
