Paul Merson baffled by VAR after late Manchester United goal v West Ham
Paul Merson saw David Moyes’ fury after Manchester United’s late goal saw them beat West Ham 1-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Marcus Rashford found the back of the net after a pass by Edinson Cavani – but Merson feels that VAR should have checked for two instances of offside.
Cavani was checked by VAR and was put under the microscope on social media after the game – but not much has been said about Rashford.

Merson couldn’t understand why the next phase of that attack wasn’t looked at as closely while speaking on Sky Sports News on Saturday.
“Now, Cresswell’s going back with Rashford so [Cavani] was onside but they don’t show you the Rashford one, which is quite strange,” said Merson [04:40pm].
“They didn’t show that and just looked at the Cavani one, didn’t show the Rashford one.
“They went ballistic, everybody was running down, the subs, it was like they’d won the cup final. But David Moyes chewing, he was absolutely chewing.
“I mean as soon as the full-time whistle went, it wasn’t a great game but it would have been a job done for West Ham, they’d have done what they needed to do, get a point and make sure they don’t get beat.
“But in the end, all three [Man United] substitutions work well].”

Nothing to moan about
There was nothing wrong with Man United’s goal.
It’s hard to admit it because we really did not deserve to lose that game. But both Cavani and Rashford were both onside for that goal and it was right to stand.
Man United’s substitutions worked out for them whereas we maybe saw our lack of depth exposed slightly as we couldn’t bring players in like Rashford or Cavani.
There’s just over a week left of the January transfer window and no players have been signed and that is a great shame because one or two clever additions could really see this side push on and get a Champions League place for next season.
West Ham’s need for a new striker is obvious while the defence could also do with a bit more quality added to it.
There are ageing players and players who are susceptible to injuries in our defence so there’s definitely a case for investment there.
