Paul Brown tips West Ham United to ‘resurrect’ transfer interest in Jonathan Tah in January

Paul Brown has admitted he wouldn’t be surprised to see West Ham United “resurrect” their interest in Jonathan Tah in January as David Moyes is a “big fan” of the German.

The Hammers have started the season well, sitting sixth in the Premier League after 19 matches and have booked their place in the Europa League knockout stages having impressively topped their group.

However, they are expected to dip their toes into the transfer market once again in January and freelance journalist Brown has admitted that a move for Tah could be on the cards again as the 27-year-old has remained on the Irons’ radar.

As quoted by Give Me Sport (30 December) he said: “It’s interesting that they’d be going for a central defender because they seem quite well stocked there. That would suggest that somebody is leaving if they were to do a deal like that.

“Tah is actually someone who’s been on their radar for two or three years. I know that Moyes personally is a big fan of that player. He’s been to watch him personally over the years. There was a time when West Ham potentially even did make a bid for Tah.

“For whatever reason the transfer didn’t come off. I think he’s remained on their radar since and it wouldn’t surprise me if they resurrect that one. I think the squad has needs in other areas that are probably greater than centre-back.

“So it will be interesting to see which way they invest their money in January. I do think there’ll be signings coming in if they can make them.”

One to watch

Tah is an incredibly experienced central defender who has seemingly been linked with a switch to the London Stadium every transfer window for the last three or four years.

Whether or not the Hammers will finally act on that interest or will instead just remain admirers of the German is yet to be seen but it is clear that he remains a potential option ahead of January given Moyes’ admiration.

Arguably, a new centre-forward or another wide option has to be top of the Irons shopping list when the transfer window opens, rather than another centre-back, but should Nayef Aguerd depart the London Stadium, a move for Tah would make a lot of sense.

If Moyes is to extend his contract in East London in the new year, that may also impact this potential transfer. The Scotsman is quite clearly keen on signing the 27-year-old and should he remain in charge at West Ham he could push for the move.
