Northern Irish media reacts as West Ham United loanee Callum Marshall subbed off in draw

Northern Irish media have reacted to West Ham United teenager Callum Marshall’s latest performance on the international stage.

The 19-year-old failed to impress before being subbed off in the 67th minute as Northern Ireland were held to a 0-0 draw by Belarus in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday (12 October).

He showed glimpses of his talent in the early stages of the game but fizzled out eventually, leaving the media with not much to write about.

BelfastLive (12 October) rated him 6/10 and wrote: “The Huddersfield man started brightly but tired as the game went on.”

The Belfast Telegraph agreed with the score, but was more critical of Marshall’s passing, writing: “Worked hard and denied in the first half by Lapoukhov following a smart angled shot. Slightly mistimed his passing when better options were available.”

The Northern Irish media were perhaps being gentle with their criticism of Marshall considering his age as struggled to make an impact against Belarus.

Starting alongside Jamie Reid up front, the teenager had the chance to earn his side the second win of the tournament.

That was not to be as the duo missed three big chances between them, according to FotMob.

While there are no doubts about Marshall’s potential, Saturday’s game showed that he is still not ready for West Ham’s first team.

It is worth noting that the striker has also not netted a goal for loan club Huddersfield Town since their 1-0 win against Shrewsbury in August.

It is important that Marshall starts firing on all cylinders as he aims to break into the Hammers’ squad next season.

He will be hopeful of setting things straight when Northern Ireland lock horns with Belarus again on Tuesday (15 October).
