Noel Whelan claims ‘fantastic’ ace would be ‘perfect’ signing for West Ham
Nathaniel Clyne would be an ideal signing for West Ham, according to pundit Noel Whelan.
The Liverpool defender is currently out injured with a ligament issue, and has yet to play for the Reds so far this term.
But it is understood that he is nearing a return, and that he could be attracting attention from east London.
According to a report from the Guardian, David Moyes could be looking to make a move or a new right-back, and the 28-year-old is among the options being considered.
And Whelan believes that it would be a smart piece of business.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “He’s been hampered with injuries, but yeah this seems the perfect match for player and club if he can stay fit and get himself right.
“Moyes could have a really good player on his hands, and with Fredericks and Clyne there, two fantastic players and good options.”
Would Clyne be a good signing for the Hammers?
You have to feel for Nathaniel Clyne.
It wasn’t too long ago that he was England’s first choice right-back, and he had his place in Liverpool’s starting XI pretty much nailed on too.
Since then, injuries have been cruel to him, and the advent of Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t exactly helped him at domestic or international level either.
If, however, the Hammers can land the same player who impressed so much prior to his injuries, then this should be a no-brainer.
Clyne has talent in abundance, and looked solid enough during his loan spell with Bournemouth in the second half of last season.
He averaged 2.4 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game for the Cherries, as per Whoscored, and having him and Ryan Fredericks to choose from at right-back, with Pablo Zabaleta very much approaching the end of his career, could only be a good thing.
