Niclas Fullkrug makes admission about what happened in West Ham United loss v Aston Villa

Niclas Fullkrug admits West Ham United’s season didn’t get off to the best of starts when they lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Julen Lopetegui handed Fullkrug, 31, his competitive debut for the Hammers when he came off the bench in the 73rd minute to replace Michail Antonio.

However, six minutes after his introduction at the London Stadium, Jhon Duran – who could have joined the Irons instead of the Germany striker this summer – scored Villa’s winner.

Writing via his personal Instagram account on Sunday afternoon (18 August), Fullkrug said: “Not the result we wanted to start the season, but a lot to build on.

“We go again on Saturday!”

West Ham lose Premier League opener v Aston Villa thanks to Jhon Duran

It wasn’t the best day at the office for West Ham, who were arguably lucky to have won the penalty that led to their only goals of the game while Duran – of all people – came off the bench to score Villa’s winning goal in the 79th minute.

All in all, Hammers fans aren’t too downbeat by the result.

Aston Villa finished fourth last season and have a very good squad with a manager who’s without a doubt one of the best in the division.

It’s still early days in Lopetegui’s reign as well and a lot of supporters understand the fact that it’s a new manager with a lot of new players that he needs to gel together.

West Ham have rightly been praised for their summer business but there has to be some patience.

Luckily, the fanbase on the whole seem to be happy to give Lopetegui and his new boys that because only two new signings actually started versus Villa in Max Kilman and Guido Rodriguez.
