West Ham recently appointed Rob Newman as their Head of Recruitment after his departure from Manchester City, and it is a good move.
The arrival of the former scout will take some of the recruitment responsibility off the shoulders of David Moyes, and the Hammers will be aiming to significantly improve the quality of their signings at all levels.
Newman managed Man City’s team of scouts that regularly scoured the world for the best talent available over the last decade, and the results were evident for all to see.
West Ham could be making giant strides in the market too by unearthing more hidden gems available on bargain deals, but could David Sullivan slow things down?
According to Football.London, Newman and Moyes will be working closely alongside the Hammers co-chairman as the club look to continue their success in the transfer market.
However, Sullivan should completely step back and allow a seasoned professional handle the affairs alongside the manager.
The co-owner should not have any business whatsoever telling the manager and head of recruitment who to sign or not to, and the fact that he is still very much in the picture could hold Newman back from delivering his best.
Sullivan personally signed Issa Diop and Lukasz Fabianski, and he has often relied on agents’ recommendations.
He should be concentrating on his job and taken out of negotiations as that would only benefit the Irons going forward.
West Ham need to get deals done quickly during every window, and the fact that they have struggled to land a striker in two windows speaks volumes.
Man City owners kept out of Newman’s business, and Sullivan should do the same if the Hammers want to become more successful with their recruitment.
