Newcastle United want West Ham United sensation Harrison Ashby as trio of right-backs eyed up by Eddie Howe

West Ham sensation Harrison Ashby is one of the three players being reportedly eyed by Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe in the January window.

According to a report from The Daily Mail (29 December, page 69), the Magpies are targeting Lyon right-back Malo Gusto who will cost around £35m.

The Magpies have also earmarked Real Valladolid defender Ivan Fresneda as another option.

Exit likely

Ashby is a player who has looked destined to leave the Hammers, but his next destination is unknown.

The 21-year-old has a contract at the club until the end of the season, and he is not keen to sign an extension.

The youngster is one of the highly-rated young talents to have come out from the academy ranks, but David Moyes cannot give him the game time he deserves.

West Ham

West Ham have Ben Johnson and Vladimir Coufal as two first-choice right-backs while Thilo Kehrer and Maxwel Cornet as also capable of playing in that role.

It’s looking clear that Ashby and his agent are keen to earn him a bigger contract, but he is yet to make an impact on the first team.

In the past few years, we have seen West Ham have lost academy talents to rival Premier League clubs (Sonny Perkins to Leeds United for example) and Ashby could be next in line for the exit.
