Moyes claims West Ham nearly made a move for Danny Welbeck this summer

West Ham boss David Moyes has explained that he nearly made a move for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck when he was available as a free agent this summer.

Welbeck was released by Watford following their relegation to the Championship and the former Manchester United man was snapped up by the Seagulls.

The Hammers face Brighton this weekend which has prompted Moyes to detail how he almost tried to bring the former England international to the London Stadium.

The Daily Mail quote Moyes as saying, “Danny was someone who I did consider. I was probably just a little concerned about his injuries in the past more than anything else.

“But I am really pleased for him because I enjoyed working with him at Manchester United. He is a great boy and so enthusiastic.

“He is a good footballer who has worked hard on his game and has been doing well for Brighton.”

Welbeck has scored two goals in eight Premier League appearances since his move to the Amex with his last strike rescuing a point for the Seagulls in the dying moments of their game against Sheffield United.

Welbeck does have a poor injury record but he has managed to stay fit since his summer move.

If the 30-year-old had joined West Ham then it would’ve said a lot about Moyes’ trust in his other strikers.

In Michail Antonio and Sebastien Haller, Moyes has a brilliant striker and one who can perform when needed who acts as suitable backup.

There was no need for Welbeck as surely Haller would sit above the former Arsenal man in the pecking order.

Of course, the transfer never happened so it is unlikely that we will find out Moyes’ thinking behind considering a move for one of his former players.

Moyes, and Hammers fans, will be hoping that Welbeck doesn’t find the net against the Irons during Sunday’s game.

In other West Ham news, Inter Milan’s CEO has claimed that Hammers linked Christian Eriksen has been transfer listed.
