Mount's Ballon d'Or achievement could see Rice consider West Ham future
West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has reacted after Mason Mount emerged as the 19th best player in the world at the 2021 Ballon d’Or awards.
The Chelsea midfielder was nominated for the prestigious prize alongside some of the best players on the planet, and his friend Rice was proud of the achievement, taking to his personal Twitter account to react.
Winning the Champions League last season helped put Mount in contention for the biggest individual prize in football, but could it get the Hammers ace thinking about his future at the London Stadium?
Reacting to the development, Rice said: “Proud.”
The midfielder has made it known he wants to play regular Champions League football, but he will also want to be challenging for it, and David Moyes’ side are not near that level right now.
Sunday’s 2-1 loss at Manchester City highlighted some of the shortcomings of the Hammers squad, and reaching the heights league leaders Chelsea have reached will take time to happen.
Rice and Mount grew up in the Blues academy, and with his mate now competing for the biggest prizes in the game, the West Ham star will be thinking he can do the same.
Anyone who has seen him in action this season knows he has the potential to be in the Ballon d’Or top 10 very soon, but can he realise such lofty ambitions at the London Stadium?
The Irons are in the knockout stages of the Europa League, in the quarterfinals of the League Cup and currently fourth in the Premier League table, but the harsh truth is that this squad has its limit.
Daniel Kretinsky’s arrival should see West Ham start improving their fortunes in the coming months, but winning the Champions or Premier League is not something that is going to happen very soon.
Rice is wanted by almost all the bigwigs in England, and European heavyweights are definitely keeping tabs on him.
At 22, he has years ahead of him to establish himself as a world-class player at West Ham, but joining a bigger club will definitely help fast-track that process, and tonight’s Ballon d’Or announcement could see him start considering his future.
