Mike Maignan messages West Ham United star after ‘great win’ vs Newcastle
West Ham had many fantastic individual performers against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.
Nuno Espirito Santo will have been delighted after West Ham beat Newcastle 3-1 at the London Stadium, as he picked up his first Premier League win in charge of the Hammers.
West Ham has been toxic in recent times, and the win was exactly what everyone needed ahead of some crucial games in the relegation battle.
The win has lifted the Irons into 18th in the Premier League table, as West Ham still face the prospect of relegation this season.
However, one man’s performance in particular earned high praise from AC Milan and French international goalkeeper Mike Maignan, despite recent criticism.

Mike Maignan reacts to Jean-Clair Todibo’s performance
Nuno decided to stick with Jean-Clair Todibo, despite being criticised for picking him in recent games.
Newcastle went ahead after four minutes, as it looked like another devastating result was coming the Hammers’ way, as Todibo would most likely have had fingers pointed at him.
- Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy scored as the atmosphere turned sour at the London Stadium
- West Ham had a penalty overturned in the 11th minute after a four-minute VAR check
- Despite this, West Ham led 2-1 at half-time and went on to win
Todibo took to Instagram to share his delight at a “great win” for West Ham and thanked supporters, as Maignan responded to his fellow French compatriot.
Maignan left three fire emojis on Todibo’s post as the latter responded with love hearts.
Now, with a West Ham win under Todibo’s belt after many games of woe, Hammers fans may see the best of him, as his stats have impressed.
Todibo’s performance vs Newcastle suggests his best is coming
At Nottingham Forest, Nuno built a winning side based on a strong defence, and that will again be key for success at West Ham.
So far this season, West Ham’s defence has been criticised for a lack of cohesion, and whenever Todibo has performed, fans have brought up how he’s been a transfer failure.
| Minutes | Ground duels (won) | Accurate passes | Rating |
| 90 | 3 (3) | 22/25 | 6.9 |
Todibo’s performance against Newcastle was statistically his best of the season, as he played better than Max Kilman, who recorded a rating of 6.4 against the Magpies.
This could be a turning point in Todibo’s West Ham career, as Hammers fans will hope to see his true potential under Nuno.
