Mike Dean reacts to West Ham United controversy live on Sky Sports after Kalvin Phillips footage

Mike Dean has criticised Kalvin Phillips for his “stupid” red card against Nottingham Forest, as West Ham lost 2-0 on Saturday 17 February.

The Hammers were trailing to a Taiwo Awoniyi first-half opener, and with no signs of David Moyes’ men getting back into the game, they were about to succumb to their eighth match without a win in all competitions.

All hope was lost when the Manchester City loanee doubled down on a yellow card foul on Nicolas Dominguez, crunching Morgan Gibbs-White with a hot-headed challenge.

Speaking live via Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (17 February, 4:35pm), the former referee said: “He’s just been cautioned for getting involved with Dominguez for no reason whatsoever, and then two minutes later, Gibbs-White flicks the ball over and he catches him on top of the foot.

“It’s a stupid second yellow card, and he’s just wasted his time playing. He just doesn’t look interested for me.”

Kalvin Phillips’ West Ham nightmare continues

The England international will have been jumping for joy when he secured his loan move away from Etihad Stadium during the January transfer window, with the promise of gaining valuable minutes ahead of Euro 2024.

However, even having gained match fitness over the last couple of appearances, Phillips has still lacked the composure and ability in midfield, prompting many fans to question why they signed him until the end of the season.

His cameos for West Ham have been riddled with errors, costing goals against Bournemouth and Manchester United, and continues to fail in his attempts to make a positive impact at the club.

The 28-year-old has certainly left some kind of impact at West Ham, but that is currently a negative one amid a string of poor outings under Moyes.

It is difficult to see how Phillips comes back from this, and could very much affect his chances of being called up for England too.

In other West Ham news, Steve Cooper was sacked by Forest this season but could yet end up at the London Stadium.
