Michael Owen predicts scoreline of West Ham clash v Arsenal

West Ham United will earn a draw against Arsenal on Wednesday evening, according to Michael Owen.

The Hammers travel to the Emirates Stadium in midweek following a dull 0-0 draw at Burnley on Sunday afternoon (12 December).

Just two points separate the two teams ahead of the game, with David Moyes’s side fourth in the Premier League table and the Gunners in sixth.

Writing in his latest predictions column for BetVictor, Owen went for a 1-1 draw in this London derby.

“This should be a good game,” he said. “I never quite know what to expect from Arsenal. They were poor at Goodison last Monday and then cruised to the win against Southampton. This is a great chance for them though, a win here will see them jump above the Hammers.

“Away trips to Burnley are never easy, but David Moyes will still be disappointed to have come away with just the one point. West Ham are still fourth, but the chasing pack is closing on them.

“West Ham will be desperate not to lose this game and will try and keep things tight. I can see them frustrating Arsenal and getting a point here.”

Crucial game

Wednesday’s game could prove to be very significant in the context of the season.

With Arsenal right behind us in the table, getting three points at the Emirates Stadium would be a huge statement of intent going forward.

Arsenal were comfortable 3-0 winners over Southampton on Saturday (11 December) but they have been inconsistent this season so they are definitely beatable.

The draw against Burnley on Sunday (12 December) was certainly frustrating, but we have tended to step up our game against better sides this season, as shown by the wins over Liverpool and Chelsea.

If we were to lose at the Emirates Stadium, we would drop out of the top four for the first time in two months, but a win would be a big confidence boost in the race for Champions League qualification.

A draw certainly wouldn’t be a bad result, but the feeling is that the Gunners are there to be got at.
