Martin Keown rages at ‘really criminal’ West Ham United incident as MOTD footage emerges v Brentford

Martin Keown has blasted Konstantinos Mavropanos after he scored an own goal in the West Ham defeat against Brentford on Saturday (4 November).

Speaking on Match of the Day (49:16), the pundit questioned whether Alphonse Areola should have come out to collect Bryan Mbeumo’s cross into the box before the Greek international headed through his own net.

But he added that it was “really criminal” from the 25-year-old centre-back and that he “should be doing better” as the Hammers fell to a 3-2 loss against the Bees.

“Crosses were the order of the day,” said Keown. “They just want to put crosses in and get bodies in there. As I say, they’re brave with their setup. Look at that for a turn and hit from Mbuemo, as I said last year, probably the most underrated forward in the Premier League.

“Here’s another one, it’s so inviting. Maybe the keeper should come for it, but Mavropanos is making a mistake there, which was really criminal and [he] should be doing better than that.”

Shoddy

It was shoddy defending all around from West Ham as they let Brentford back into the game after going in at half-time in the lead.

Mbuemo was afforded far too much space to put a cross into a dangerous area, but Areola surely has to be coming to claim the ball inside his own six-yard box.

That led to Mavropanos heading into the top corner of his own net from just a few yards out as he looked off-balance when attempting to clear the ball from danger.

West Ham

There were three disappointing errors from Hammers players in this instance and it just isn’t good enough as our defending seems to have fallen off dramatically in recent weeks.

It’s rare for a David Moyes team to be giving away so many sloppy goals, so you would imagine this is something he’ll be looking to get on top of over the coming weeks.

In other West Ham news, a journalist has warned the Hammers about a “huge misjudgement” after contract news has emerged.
