Lyon fans riot losing West Ham Europa League decider

West Ham United are Europa League semi-finalists after they went to France and dismantled Lyon 3-0 in their own backyard last night.

Craig Dawson, Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen were the heroes in claret on the night as they all found a way beyond the Lyon goalkeeper to send the packed out away end into raptures.

The Ligue 1 side did not know what had hit them as they crashed out of the Europa League and their supporters let them know of their displeasure.

Evening Standard journalist Jack Rosser shared footage, via Twitter, of the scenes at full-time as the Hammers players headed to the away section of the stadium, Lyon fans were rioting in the stands.

Smoke can be seen from a distance and stewards appear to be trying their best to hold back supporters trying to get onto the pitch.

Ours to lose

Thankfully, no one was hurt during these protests but the French fans are clearly not happy to have been beaten by the massive West Ham.

Last night’s performance was exceptional on every level and David Moyes deserves huge credit for how he got his players regrouped after the disappointment of not winning the first leg.

Aaron Cresswell’s red card at the London Stadium could have been enough to disrupt lesser sides but such is the unity around the club right now, it made them even stronger.

Lyon might have had 68% of the possession during the game but that is the most irrelevant statistic in the game when you do as little as they did with the ball.

West Ham have their last four place booked now and their opponents in the semi-final won’t be Barcelona as expected after they were unceremoniously dumped out by Eintracht Frankfurt on a huge night at the Nou Camp.

In other West Ham news, Chris Sutton shared his instant reaction to last night’s triumph, branding it “terrific”.
