Lukasz Fabianski set to start for West Ham against Newcastle United
West Ham start the new Premier League season with a trip to Newcastle United on August 15 and Lukasz Fabianski is set to start in goals, according to Football.London.
The Polish goalkeeper, 36, started the last three matches for the Hammers and has a lot more pre-season football under his belt.
Summer signing Alphonse Areola, 28, made his first appearance for West Ham in the 2-0 win over Atalanta on Saturday, coming off the bench as a 64th-minute substitute.
Huge dilemma
We do not envy manager David Moyes at all, but having two quality goalkeepers is a massive boost for West Ham without a doubt.
Fabianski has played more than Areola in pre-season, and that is an indication that he is expected to start against Newcastle.
However, the Frenchman has not come to play as a cover and is expected to break into the starting XI going forward.
An injury or suspension to the Pole would give Areola the chance to establish himself as the regular goalie, but apart from those two occurrences, we see Fabianski making it hard for him.
The former Arsenal man knows he can no longer get away with a dip in form and errors like he used to in the past, and that is more than enough inspiration to keep him going.
Moyes, despite rightly dubbing the France international “talented” after he joined us [whufc.com], is not likely to remove a player from his starting line-up when he is doing well, and we definitely have an interesting battle between the goalkeepers on the cards.
With Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup to play, there are a lot of games for the duo to see action, but none of them wants to play second fiddle this season.
Fabianski has just 11 months on his deal, but an extension cannot be ruled out if he shows no sign of a dip.
We would love to have such fierce and quality competition in the striking department and all across other areas too, but the summer transfer activity has not been encouraging, with no outfield player yet to be signed.
