Lukasz Fabianski contract development at West Ham United after clauses triggered

West Ham United goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has confirmed he will be staying at the London Stadium beyond the summer after a clause in his contract has been triggered.

The Hammers fan-favourite had initially been fearing for his West Ham future with his contract running out in June despite some impressive performances throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

However, speaking to Polish outlet Sportowefakty [28 May], the 37-year-old confirmed he managed to meet two conditions in his contract which automatically brought a one-year extension.

“I had two conditions to meet in order to fulfil the clause in the contract. Both were fulfilled, so it was automatically extended,” said the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper.

“One of them I felt would be easier to do than the other. But we had to fight for a place in the Premier League a little longer than I expected. Fortunately, this condition was met, so the contract was extended for a year. So I will always be a West Ham player.

“I am proud to be entering my seventeenth season in the Premier League. Looking at my history in this league, it’s fun for me to be here all the time.”

Deserved

An extension for veteran shot-stopper Fabianski is not only well-deserved on his part but also fantastic news for West Ham United fans, with the number one key to their superb results in recent seasons.

The goalkeeper has overcome the odds to continue between the sticks, recently returning to the starting XI following his facial injury to superb effect.

However, the club could have been forgiven for identifying a long-term replacement between the sticks with the Polish international not capable of performing at the highest level for much of the next campaign.

What does that mean for Alphonse Areola? Will he be trusted to become the new number one next season, with Fabianski fulfilling a bit-part role?

Or will the former PSG shot-stopper leave the London Stadium this summer, with West Ham United potentially identifying an inevitable Fabianski replacement? It may be time for the Irons to start planning ahead.
