WHZ View: Ludovic Ajorque could be perfect foil for Michail Antonio
West Ham badly need a striker and David Moyes has reiterated that he is looking to make some signings this month.
The Hammers are chasing a top-four finish and bringing in a striker would give them a massive lift.
According to a recent report from Foot Mercato, West Ham are following Strasbourg striker Ludovic Ajorque, and he could be a smart addition.
It’s not just about signing a striker this month, it’s about signing the right kind of player as well.
Ideally, Moyes would love to have someone who brings the same qualities that Michail Antonio, the club’s only striker, brings, if not more.
It means the Hammers will be looking at strikers who are mobile, strong physically, good in the air, tactically adaptable, and of course, know where the net is.
Ajorque is four years younger than Antonio and he is about to enter his prime years.
He has scored 10 goals and delivered six assists in the French league, three more than Antonio’s contribution in the Premier League. However, both leagues are different and playing for West Ham poses different challenges.
Both these players are strong in the air. Ajorque with 74.2% passing accuracy as per Whoscored, is like Antonio whose passing needs to improve. However, he likes to do lay-offs and has the ability to play out long passes.
He has an eye for goals and is good at creating chances (1.2 key passes). However, what should interest Moyes is his defensive contributions, something we don’t see from strikers.
He can make neat tackles and loves to put defensive shifts which makes him a utility player. In comparison, Antonio manages 0.7 tackles per game.
On paper, he looks like a perfect foil for Antonio, just what Moyes needs.
