Lea Ferdinand names what West Ham have been missing this season
There’s no doubt that this season simply hasn’t gone the way anyone at West Ham United wanted it too. In fact, it’s been close to a disaster.
The Hammers head into Monday night’s clash with Premier League leaders Liverpool in 18th place and in serious relegation trouble.
Indeed, if the campaign ended today they’d be down, and that’s simply not good enough for a club like the Irons.
There are real problems with this squad, from an over-reliance on goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to a lack of depth in central midfield.
Former West Ham striker Les Ferdinand believes he knows what’s gone wrong with the Hammers this term.
“One of the things that managers do when they come in at a football club is turn around and say that the team ain’t fit enough in their eyes,” he told Football London.
“Sometimes you look unfit when you’re not confident and West Ham players are not confident at the moment and it’s about going in and him trying to lift the spirits.
“They’ve got the ability in their squad but it’s the goalscorer upfront who will get 10-15 goals in the league. If you’ve got that you give yourself a great chance of staying in the division.”
Are the Irons simply missing a goalscorer?
That’s oversimplifying things, of course, but it’s certainly a big issue for the east London outfit.
Sebastien Haller hasn’t delivered the goods since arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt for big money last summer.
Meanwhile, his fellow new recruit Albian Ajeti has been little more than an afterthought under both Manuel Pellegrini and David Moyes.
The team hasn’t been able to stick the ball in the back of the net with any sort of regularity, and it’s hampered them, for sure.
In other West Ham news, a former England international has been speaking about a Moyes selection decision.
