Kurt Zouma back on grass as West Ham hope for quicker recovery

West Ham centre-back Kurt Zouma has started walking on grass for the first time since his knee injury, and a quicker return is expected, according to Claret and Hugh.

The Frenchman, 27, sustained the knock against Chelsea earlier in December, and while he was tipped to spend months on the sidelines, there are now hopes that he could be back in action as soon as mid-February.

Some at the club believe it could be even sooner than that, and his decision to opt against going under the knife as advised by his personal physicians appears to have paid off.

Huge boost

With the former Blues star already able to do some grass work, the signs are very positive indeed, and David Moyes will be hoping for a quick return.

Zouma is definitely eager to be playing as early as February, and that will be a huge boost if it happens.

West Ham are expected to bring in one or two covers in January due to his absence and Angelo Ogbonna’s, but they could decide against it if they discover that the France international has improved significantly during the closing days of next month.

The Hammers need to remain solid at the back to keep their top-four chances alive, and Issa Diop and Craig Dawson are proving that they are capable.

Zouma is on a different level compared to them, though, and good news could be on the cards.

He could be available for the Europa League last-16 clash due to take place in March from the look of things, and that is promising.

A slight tweak in format to the competition this season has seen West Ham avoid the last-32, with teams who came second in their groups to play those sides who came third in the Champions League to enter the last 16.

The Irons topped group H and have effectively earned a bye into the second knockout stage, with the last-16 draw taking place on the 25 February.
