Kalvin Phillips torn to shreds on Sky Sports after West Ham United v Ipswich incident

Sue Smith has blasted Kalvin Phillips for his role in West Ham United taking the lead against Ipswich at the London Stadium on Saturday.

The on-loan Blues midfielder attempted to pass the ball back to his defensive line and didn’t put enough power on it, allowing Michail Antonio to capitalise and start an attack for the Hammers, which he then managed to finish.

While this put West Ham in the lead, their one-goal cushion didn’t last for long as Liam Delap bagged an equaliser just five minutes after the opener.

Mohammed Kudus then netted in the 44th minute, meaning the Irons went in at the break 2-1 ahead.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (3 October, 15:03pm) Smith shared her thoughts on the Hammers’ opener.

“They’ve got one, it’s 1-0 to West Ham and it’s Kalvin Phillips, the ball comes into him in the middle of the park and just takes too many touches,” Smith said.

“It’s a poor pass back to his centre half and Antonio wins the ball back really, really well”.

West Ham United need to pull things together

While the Hammers managed to bag the opening goal of the game, it still feels like a lot more could come from them.

Their start to the season has been abysmal despite all the money that was spent on bolstering their ranks during the summer transfer window.

The likes of Jean Clair-Todibo were chosen to start the game by Julen Lopetegui and, while his addition has helped solidify the defence, it feels like a lot more could be done by the Frenchman.

The Spaniard decided to name an unchanged team for the clash against the Tractor Boys from their last time out against Brentford where they drew 1-1.

While Antonio seemingly managed to live up to the faith that Lopetegui put into him by starting him, it feels as if the other players on the team could be doing more.

West Ham needs a win and if they don’t manage to get another goal before full-time, it’ll feel like yet another two points dropped against a team they should be able to take all three points from.
