Julen Lopetegui sack update amid fresh alarm among West Ham board

Julen Lopetegui is safe at West Ham United for now despite “fresh alarm” among the club’s hierarchy after the 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool, Jason Burt has said.

Writing in The Telegraph (30 December), Burt revealed that Lopetegui will be given more time to turn things around at The London Stadium despite growing unrest among supporters.

The performance against Liverpool did cause some concern within the hierarchy in East London but the club would prefer to assess the manager’s performance at the end of the season if possible, meaning the under-fire Spaniard will have more time to prove himself for now.

Julen Lopetegui on his last chance at West Ham

David Sullivan has seemingly opted to give the Spanish manager more time at West Ham for now and when you look at the fact that the Hammers nine points clear of the bottom three, and only seven back of the top six, the board are probably thinking there is no need for immediate action.

There is also the context that Liverpool are in red-hot form and flying at the top of the Premier League, not that that should excuse such a limp display to end the calendar year because it doesn’t.

Indeed, many of the frustrations with the 58-year-old come from the performances being delivered by the Irons rather than just the result itself, even in some of the victories this season the displays have felt hugely underwhelming.

Despite the East London outfit wanting to see an improvement in the style of football, this has not been delivered under the new boss with poor performances and a lack of ideas seeming to be a key theme of the campaign.

The boss may have been given more time for now but Lopetegui has to turn it around on a consistent basis in the coming weeks otherwise he surely sees his time with West Ham come to an end.

In other West Ham news, former FIFA chief Keith Hackett has shared if this Irons star will face a ban after what did against Liverpool.
