Journo delivers verdict on West Ham United ticket pricing v Silkeborg
The Sun’s former senior football reporter Duncan Wright believes West Ham got their ticket pricing wrong during their 1-0 Conference League win over Silkeborg.
Manuel Lanzini’s 24th-minute penalty was enough for David Moyes’ side to secure top spot in their group and avoid the first knockout round of the competition.
However, it’s been suggested by Wright (via Twitter, 27 October) that the club should have been looking to reduce ticket prices due to the London Stadium being half full.
“All those empty seats at West Ham. During a school half term. Suggests they got their pricing all wrong – this kind of game should be cheap as chips and a sell-out,” he said.
Bang on
Wright is spot on in his assessment of what should have been done on the ticketing front for the Hammers. It’s hard to understand why the club didn’t look to fill the vast swathes of empty seats, which were clearly visible.
It would’ve been good to fill the London Stadium on Thursday evening, with kids’ tickets being under £10 for example. Nevertheless, it was a missed opportunity for the Irons.
Lower league clubs, who are often more cash-strapped than Premier League teams, run kids for a quid campaigns on a yearly basis. It’s certainly something top-flight teams should be looking to do, particularly in less important competitions and fixtures.

Furthermore, West Ham would have benefitted financially from selling cheaper tickets with only half of the London Stadium occupied. It does feel like a missed opportunity from the club.
Moyes’ side now turn their attention back to the Premier League with a tough trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Sunday (30 October).
