Journalist: West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen nervous about England call

Sami Mokbel has claimed West Ham star Jarrod Bowen will be nervous about his place in the England squad for the upcoming European Championships in Germany.

The Daily Mail journalist claimed that despite his excellent form for West Ham, the winger could miss out on the call for the major tournament due to the level of competition in the England squad.

Bowen has been involved in the last two England squads under Gareth Southgate after his flying start to the season but was recently sent home after picking up an injury before the clash with North Macedonia.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail in which he predicted the Euro 2024 squad, Mokbel shared: “Jarrod Bowen – Nervous. Playing excellently for West Ham but again, there’s plenty of competition.”

Needs to earn the place

Unlike some of England’s stars under Southgate, Bowen is one of the players who will have to earn his place in the squad by outperforming his international teammates in the Premier League. If he can continue his top form, he will give himself a chance, but nothing is guaranteed.

His competition comes from the likes of Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford, neither of which have set the world alight for the clubs this season, while Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka present nailed-on inclusions for the tournament, whom Bowen would struggle to displace.

With players like Raheem Sterling, Ebere Eze, James Maddison and Cole Palmer also in contention for the call from Southgate, there is plenty of competition for very few positions on the plane.

All Bowen can do is keep up his club form, where he has scored eight goals and provided one assist in 12 Premier League games so far this season, and hope it is enough to catch the manager’s eye, while the other players mentioned fail to impress.

In other West Ham news, one Hammers star was lucky to avoid serious injury on international duty.
