Journalist shares why West Ham United will regret Gianluca Scamacca sale, failure now a ‘distant memory’ after Atalanta form

West Ham United will now be having many regrets over the sale of Gianluca Scamacca as he is now set to become one of the three best strikers in the Serie A after recent form, according to Alvise Cagnazzo.

Scamacca failed to live up to expectations at the London Stadium following his big-money move from Sassuolo, scoring just eight goals from his 27 matches in all competitions.

A swift exit followed, joining Atalanta for a big-money £27m (Daily Mail, 7 August) and the striker has well and truly put his Hammers nightmare behind him back in Serie A, scoring five goals from his eight league games for his new club.

The 24-year-old’s latest strike came against league leaders Inter Milan in a 2-1 defeat, and MailSport journalist Cagnazzo writing in his Serie A column for the news publication, shares that the Italian’s failure in East London is now a “distant memory” and has already recovered his enthusiasm and self-esteem.

He wrote: “Gianluca Scamacca has become a central pivot at Atalanta, and already looks far better than he ever did at West Ham.

“West Ham may have many regrets for letting him go because Scamacca will become one of the three best Italian strikers in the space of a few months and will probably soon be a protagonist with the Italian national team.

“With coach Alessio Dionisi of Sassuolo he had the opportunity to show off and enjoy his brief experience in the Premier League while with Gasperini, who strongly wanted him at Atalanta, he finally has matured tactically and psychologically.

“His failure at West Ham is now just a distant memory and Scamacca can finally work to become the best Italian number nine in Serie A.”

Should have been given time

The 24-year-old has scored five goals from his eight league games for his new club, a figure that already surpasses his three Premier League goals from 16 matches at the London Stadium.

Why the Hammers let him go after just one season is beyond baffling and they are certainly feeling the effects right now with Michail Antonio suffering an inevitable decline, Danny Ings struggling for minutes and consistency and Moyes heavily reliant on Jarrod Bowen.

There were repeated stances during Scamacca’s time in East London that he did not fit Moyes’ style and tactics which had certainly been proved right but given his superb abilities and potential, he really should have been given time to bed in.

Scamacca appeared to tick all the boxes, given his classy forward qualities and stark potential to become one of the best strikers on the continent but David Moyes never saw the striker he thought he was signing.

It’s a real shame how his time at the club ended and it now seems as if Scamacca is the one reaping the benefits from the move with West Ham United now yet again, searching for another striker in the upcoming winter window.
