Journalist reacts to UEFA announcement that could cause ‘carnage’ for West Ham United and Liverpool fans
Journalist Lewis Steele has predicted “carnage” if West Ham and/or Liverpool make it to the Europa League final in Dublin after UEFA’s ticket announcement.
The European football governing body announced that each club competing in the final of the Europa League at the Aviva Stadium would receive 12,000 tickets for the game.
With the game taking place in Dublin, Ireland it’s a short trip for British clubs to travel across and with so little tickets available to fans, Steele took to his personal Twitter account to react to the news (9 April).
“Clubs will get 25,000 tickets each for fans in Champions League final at Wembley,” he said.
“Just 12,000 each for Europa League at the Aviva Stadium. Could be carnage on the streets of Dublin if Liverpool and/or West Ham get there.”
Why are UEFA giving such low tickets to fans?
Once again, UEFA are letting everyone know that they don’t actually care about fans by offering just 24,000 tickets to fans for a 51,000+ seater stadium to clubs.
There is obviously no guarantee that West Ham or even Liverpool make it to the final in Dublin, but the fact the ticket allocations are so low mean this is a very real potential issue.
Everyone saw how fans of the Hammers travelled to Prague in their thousands, even without tickets and they made the atmosphere before a game absolutely huge and memorable.
So having a host of Liverpool and West Ham fans travelling abroad without sufficient tickets to get them all into the stadium increases the chances of clashes on the streets.
Police hopefully will know how to deal with it, and hopefully, the clubs can put something together to allow them to watch the game safely. But we’ve seen before that there is a chance for carnage, and it will all be on UEFA not being fair with their ticket allocations.
