Joe Cole backs West Ham star Jarrod Bowen to ‘make it work’ for England
Joe Cole has backed West Ham attacker Jarrod Bowen to showcase his potential for England.
The 25-year-old was initially called up for international duty by Gareth Southgate in March but a foot injury hampered his chances of representing the country.
However, former England international Cole believes that this could be a massive moment for the former Hull City man.
“For Jarrod Bowen, this could be one of the biggest moments of his football journey,” Joe Cole told PA News Agency as quoted by the Independent. “I do believe he can make it work in an England shirt.
“There are some players within the side for whom this shirt is too heavy. I am looking forward to seeing him represent England.
“Even though I don’t know him much considering his Premier League career is very short, his instincts tell me that he has got a personality that will be well-suited to England.”
Bowen was one of the standout players for the London club in the recently concluded season that saw David Moyes’ men reach the Europa League semi-finals.
West Ham’s winger had 31 goal contributions across all competitions in the recently concluded season, scoring 18 goals and providing 13 assists. Out of the 31 goal contributions, 24 came in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has played 88% of the overall minutes for West Ham in the last Premier League season where he made 1.1 key passes per match, according to Whoscored.
Considering Harry Kane is likely to lead the line for England, and with Rashford and Sterling out of form, Bowen will have a fair chance of playing as a winger to complement the Tottenham Hotspur star striker.
If Kane drops deep, Bowen is the kind of attacker who can feed on balls within the spaces and score goals. Moreover, he also has the tendency to drift into the middle from the wing which would bring the fullbacks into the play.
