Jim White: West Ham United fans would have screamed for red card if Cresswell foul was other way round

Jim White has insisted that West Ham United fans would have been screaming for a red card if it was a Lyon player that committed the same foul as Aaron Cresswell.

The left-back was shown his marching orders after being deemed to have pulled Moussa Dembele down to stop a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Simon Jordan shut down the argument and admitted that it was all “supposition” and made little sense.

Speaking live on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan this morning [08 April], the host had an interesting argument.

“I looked at it again this morning, though,” he said.

“I’ve got to say, had it been the other way, and it had been Antonio through, and a Lyon defender does what Cresswell did, they’d all be screaming the West Ham fans.”

Simon Jordan responded instantly and shut down the argument that was put forward by his host.

“That’s supposition,” he argued.

Irrelevant.

This doesn’t make much sense, to be honest, the only thing that matters is the poor decision made by the officials.

Dembele was going away from goal when going down, and with Cresswell and Kurt Zouma coming up on his inside, there was no chance that it was a clear chance.

We accept that it was a foul and Cresswell made contact pushing him to the floor, but it was a yellow card and a free-kick maximum.

There is no point in dwelling on this now, and all we can do is hail those 10 lads who battled it out for a full half and secured a positive result.

Now, we will go to France next week on a level playing field, knowing that any kind of win will secure our passage to the semi-finals.

Bring it on.
