Jim White: David Moyes football is compensation for West Ham fan fury over London Stadium

Jim White appears to have dismissed West Ham supporters’ disdain over the London Stadium, suggesting their current team makes up for it.

Speaking on talkSPORT (6 December), White said: “One thing they can never compensate for, let’s face it, West Ham fans have been telling me, been telling us for a long time, ‘we’re been playing football in an athletics stadium, the London Stadium is not built for purpose’.

“And there is no doubt they are a significant distance from where all the action is taking place, but do you know what? The way that Moyes has got the players playing compensates for one hell of a lot.”

No trade-off

West Ham supporters can love the way they are playing under Moyes while retaining their anger at the London Stadium – the two can be mutually exclusive.

The history made at Upton Park and what that stadium meant to so many ensured that there were high expectations when the club moved grounds.

However, it’s fair to say it has been an unmitigated disaster, in the main.

There were chaotic scenes in the early days as the struggles to convert an athletics stadium into a football stadium were laid bare.

On the pitch, form has drastically improved at the London Stadium, helping to create an intimidating atmosphere in the stands.

However, there are still big problems with it and playing great football under Moyes doesn’t negate that.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, plans new investor Daniel Kretinsky has for the stadium.
