Jim White amazed by what David Sullivan has done at West Ham United, ‘come on’

Jim White has been blown away by David Sullivan and the transfer business at West Ham United this summer.

White shared his views on talkSPORT (6 August, 10:30) during a general discussion about Sullivan and noted his investment into the side in the transfer window.

The Hammers are on the verge of completing a move for midfielder Guido Rodriguez and have announced the signings of Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug in what has proved to be a busy week for the club.

White said: “When you look at what West Ham have done, with Fullkrug most recently coming in and [Julen] Lopetegui replacing [David] Moyes, [Max] Kilman coming in for £40million, Summerville for £25m, [Wes] Foderingham as well and a Brazilian winger – I mean, come on. Talk about giving it a go.”

When a Premier League side is known as the most active in the transfer market it is never always a positive sign, but West Ham have matched quality with quantity in their recruits.

Fullkrug arrived at the London Stadium after his Euro 2024 participation with Germany, having also featured in the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund in a campaign where he scored 15 goals in all competitions.

Summerville was the Championship Player of the Year last season; Kilman brings a wealth of Premier League experience to the backline and Rodriguez will help fill the void left by Declan Rice and the injured Edson Alvarez.

Julen Lopetegui has a clear vision for his Hammers side and Sullivan is backing his manager for his first season in East London.

The 57-year-old has had a bad start to his life with the Hammers during pre-season, but the two 3-1 defeats to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace should be taken with a pinch of salt and judgements reserved until the squad is complete and settled.

It is an exciting time for West Ham fans. The club are finally showing ambition to match their reputation in the Premier League and, if the new signings can hit the ground running, will be in a fantastic position to challenge for the European spots this season.

In other West Ham news, the Irons will now have to sell two strikers to complete a long-running pursuit before the deadline.
